GranFondo Delta Alexandroupoli

The Municipality of Alexandroupolis and the wider region of Evros are preparing to welcome their first, all-out major international cycling race, with the massive participation of over 120 cyclists from 7 different countries, on Sunday, May 4th.

This is the GranFondo Delta Alexandroupoli, a unique, exciting cycling event that includes two different routes, 130 km and 70 km, with the particularity of the simultaneous presence of male and female athletes over 17 years of age with and without a race card at the starting line!

The Municipality of Alexandroupolis and the sports and cultural events organization company, Misc+ Sport Media – the organizers of the GranFondo Delta – guarantee the provision of ideal conditions and high standards for the race, which is included in the calendar of the International Cycling Union (UCI) and is under the auspices and supervision of the Hellenic Cycling Federation.

The peloton in the GranFondo (130 km) consists of six different age categories for men, one for women and the team classification, while the Medio-fondo (70 km) includes one for men and one for women.

The GranFondo Delta Alexandroupoli is the new shining link in the chain of major international sporting events that the border region of Evros has hosted or is preparing to host soon. It is an ideal expression of the extroversion of the Municipality, which aims to highlight the unique, diverse landscapes of a rapidly developing region, in the context of stimulating sports tourism.

The race will start from the iconic Lighthouse, which dominates the coastal road of Alexandroupolis, with the “0” point, when the timer starts, being located at the Irene Bridge. Afterwards, the cyclists will head towards Ferres, Loutro, Nipsa and through the Industrial Area they will return to Alexandroupolis. The 70 km ones to finish in front of Faros, and the 130 km ones to move peripherally towards Kirki and Sykorachi and from there via the Alexandroupoli-Komotini national road back towards Nea Chili and via the central roads to the common finishing point.

The changes in the landscape, with the lush greenery of the forested area, the meadows painted with spring colors, and the deep blue of the coastline, are certain to provide a wonderful backdrop and will fascinate the participants of what is already a special sporting event!
